Hey everyone, happy Sunday!
While surfing around Reddit today, I discovered a link to a brand new Sub-Reddit of interest. For those who are unfamiliar with this particular news aggregation, Sub-Reddits are small groups where users can post links, start discussions, what-have-you. This Sub-Reddit in question is called “A More Perfect Union,” and aspires to be nothing less than a “constitutional convention.”
The group offers a Google Document that is open for users to access and offer suggestions upon. That document contains the original version of the Constitution, plus a few dozen points and changes that users have put forth – one of which being term limits for members of the House of Representatives. The Bill of Rights and Amendments are not listed in this document, but as a thought exercise its a great starting point!
Will it become more than just a thought exercise?
That much…I’m not expressly sure. The idealist in me definitely wants to say “this is a great idea! Its about time we get started on this!” But, the cynic in me recognizes that a small group (one which shall hopefully grow!) will pose little chance of rising up and inspiring a full-fledged reexamination of our government.
The premise that we need to, after two hundred years, go through and tweak the Constitution is pretty reasonable. Its been done numerous times. I don’t think (nor, for that matter, do most of the Redditors in question) that we will need a total do-over on the document. I also see many areas where people of different political belief will heavily argue!
But…I also think this is a great start. In that “write a book about America’s future” dream I always cling to, one of the big things I plan to talk about is the need to update our founding document. Maybe this will even inspire me to get to work? I doubt it. Its Sunday. I had a busy weekend. But by the same token, there’s always next week!
