Racist Facebook Group Targets Obama

Editorial Update: It appears the group has gone down in flames; I can’t find a trace of it on Facebook, however I can definitely see similar things on the internet with the same thing.  This is far from over; one victory is not the end of a war – in this case, a war against racism.

I’m going to keep this short and sweet.  I’m also not the sort of man that’ll cut out the painful parts of an article – and, as you can tell by the title, this one is going to hurt, indeed.

The winner of our first, inaugural “Frowny Face Award” goes to the Facebook group entitled “Don’t ReNig 2012.”

Winner of the first Frowny-Face Award! :(

What is Don’t ReNig 2012?

As you might have guessed from the title and the name of the Facebook group, its most likely a bad take-off of the term “Renege.”  “Renege” means, as you probably know, to go back on a promise.  In an attempt to further investigate what the intended message of this site could be, as if I didn’t already know, I looked at Urban Dictionary.  It refreshed my memory on an term utilized when playing Spades and, frankly, it has nothing to do with that.

Nope; as indicated by the black border around the “no” sign over our President, the group is purely about voting against Barack Obama based on his race.  Classy?  Not at all.  Is it a hoax group intended to get attention?  Maybe.  Is it going to get reported by a boat-load of people?  Oh yes.  In fact, I took a screen-shot of the image just to prove it was real; I’ve noticed a disturbing trend on Facebook that when something is called out for being BS, it gets deleted and its simple existence is erased from the collective “history books,” leaving those who remember and mention it to be branded as conjuring up stories about racism in order to score political points.

However, in the interest of education (a field near and dear to my heart, after all!), I’ve taken the liberty to show folks where the site is wrong.  I’ve also taken the liberty of blotting out all of the names of people who commented on it – though its doubly worth noting that nobody actually seemed to support the page, but rather commented simply to make clear just what they thought of the fools who started it.

Us?  We gave them our Frowny-Face award.  If you know someone who deserves it as well, hit us up in our comment box and we’ll get back to you!

Yes, that is a World of Warcraft icon on my taskbar. What about it?
